The South African classical and jazz pianist Charl du Plessis became the first person in history to perform on a grand piano on Table Mountain on 29 March, International Piano Day. Afterwards, he said people asked the same two questions: How did he get a grand piano to the top? And what was it like playing up there?
With the help of experts, the piano was transported using the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, two days before to the event so that it could acclimatise. The view from the top of Table Mountain, which was voted one of the Official New7Wonders of Nature in 2011 was, as always, stunning and performing there provided two most contrasting visual experiences of his life, Charl du Plessis said. “Pianists are used to dark recital halls or bright spotlights that make you see barely anything in a hall or auditorium, so the pleasure of looking up and seeing one of the most beautiful views of mountains, ocean and stunned onlookers on top of one of the New7Wonders of Nature was priceless.”
