On July 7, the official 7 Wonders Day around the world, Petra celebrates and honours all the New 7 Wonders of the World, with a visual recreation, by people standing together, of a human number “7” next to the historical treasury site in Jordan.
With this 7 symbol, as well as other events to celebrate 7 Wonders Day 2024, Petra honours the world’s first-ever global vote to elect the New 7 Wonders of the World, on the 17th anniversary of their declaration. Chosen by over 100 million votes, the New 7 Wonders of the World are, in alphabetical order, Chichén Itzá of Mexico, the Colosseum of Italy, Cristo Redentor of Brazil, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu of Peru, Petra of Jordan and the Taj Mahal of India.
The Chairman of Board of Commissioners of The Petra Development & Tourism Region Authority, Dr. Fares Abdel Hafez Al-Braizat, who leads the celebrations on behalf of Petra and Jordan, says “Petra is proud to be once again at the centre of the world, together with its fellow Wonders from across our planet, celebrating this historical achievement by humanity. Being one of the New 7 Wonders of the World is not only an honour, it is a unique asset to develop social-economic opportunities across Jordan and the entire region.”
Commenting on this event, Mr. Jean-Paul de la Fuente, the Director of New7Wonders, representing the official global authority for voting for Wonders, says “We see Petra as a key partner for many future developments that will help deliver the Wonder Effect in positive economic, branding and social outcomes, just as the New7Wonders movement has already helped to achieve across the world.”
