New7Wonders celebrates the World Cup

Brazil 2014

Billions of people will be watching football for the next four weeks as 32 teams battle each other in Brazil for the World Cup trophy. New7Wonders is celebrating this global festival, too, and we’ll be using our social media channels to highlight the participating teams that are connected to our campaigns: the New7Wonders of the World, the New7Wonders of Nature and New7Wonders Cities.

The host nation, Brazil, is due for a double mention for the Statue of Christ Redeemer and the Amazon. The same goes for South Korea, which is home to Jeju Island and Seoul, one of the 28 candidates in the current phase of New7Wonders Cities. Mexico has earned a similar honour for the Pyramid at Chichén Itzá and Mexico City.

Portugal is on our list because of the role its capital, Lisbon, played during the Official Declaration of the New7Wonders of the World in 2007. We’ll be mentioning Australia because of Perth, Russia thanks to St. Petersburg and the United States regarding Chicago. Italy, which is home to the Colosseum, and Greece with Athens, represent classical civilization, while Japan, thanks to Kyoto, symbolize ancient Asia. Switzerland, home of New7Wonders Founder-President Bernard Weber, in taking part in the World Cup, as well.

“Like the voting campaigns of New7Wonders, the World Cup is a common project that unites modern societies,” said Eamonn Fitzgerald, Head of Communication at New7Wonders. To keep in touch with our tributes to the players who embody so much hope and so many dreams, join us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. And may the best team win!
