Ceremonies marking the Official Inauguration of the Amazon as one of the New7Wonders of Nature moved from the Peruvian rainforest on Monday to the nation’s capital, Lima, yesterday, when a second plaque listing the election of the river to the “canon of 7” was unveiled.
The venue for the event was the Magic Water Circuit (Circuito Mágico del Agua), which is located in a park on the edge of the downtown area of the city. With more than a dozen fountains sending water shooting into the air, choreographed to music and light, the background was very fitting for a ceremony that paid homage to one of the world’s great sources of water and life.
In a report by El Comerica headlined “Celebran en Lima declaración de la Amazonía como una de las 7 maravillas naturales“, José Luis Silva Martinot, the Peruvian Minister for Trade and Tourism, is quoted as saying, “This achievement is a tribute to Peru and Amazonian peoples.” Responding, Bernard Weber, Founder-President of New7Wonders, said that with the unveiling of the specially-commissioned bronze plaque the Amazon has become “part of the world’s memory.”
