His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has voted for Bu Tinah Island to become one of the New7Wonders of Nature. His is the first royal vote in this campaign, joining the likes of the His Highness the King of Spain Juan Carlos (voting for the Alhambra) and Her Highness Queen of Jordan (voting for Petra), both active participants in the man-made New 7 Wonders of the World campaign that climaxed in 2007.
Bu Tinah Island, located around 130 km west of Abu Dhabi, is a unique island and a core area of the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve — the first marine biosphere reserve in the region. In spite of the harsh temperatures and salinity, its habitats and species, including coral, seagrass, dugongs and sea turtles, continue to thrive, making the island an important location and living lab for climate change studies for years to come.
H.H Sheikh Mohammed commended efforts being taken to promote awareness about Abu Dhabi’s interesting biodiversity, which supporting Bu Tinah Island in the New7Wonders of Nature will help achieve.
