Zurich/Switzerland — At a special ceremony today on Cape Town’s Table Mountain, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu called upon people everywhere to celebrate the natural world we all share by voting in the Official New7Wonders of Nature campaign. Of course, as one of the visionary and inspiring leaders of reconciliation in South Africa, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Archbishop Tutu urged Africans and the world to vote for Table Mountain.
Archbishop Tutu said, “When people were incarcerated on Robben Island for many years, Table Mountain was a beacon of hope. For many people from outside of Cape Town, Table Mountain is a treasure. It has become recognized worldwide. It deserves the honor of being one of the New7Wonders. People must vote for Table Mountain.”
New7Wonders Founder and President Bernard Weber warmly welcomed Archbishop Emeritus Tutu into the New7Wonders community: “Archbishop Tutu shares the New7Wonders vision of mutual respect and people joining together for a better future. Revered worldwide for his lifelong commitment to positive, constructive dialogue, he continues to play a major role in the growth of modern South Africa. With Archbishop Tutu as the Official New7Wonders of Nature Ambassador for Table Mountain, this South African natural treasure can become a powerful symbol of unity for Africa and the world.”
